Despite him losing his place within the Congregation for Bishops on the 16th December, Cardinal Burke is a great Prince of the Church and I pray that his voice and influence will continue to be heard in Rome.
Playing catch up after Christmas, I saw that Cardinal Burke had given this interview to 'EWTN's The World Over' which was broadcast on the 12th December. The interview starts at 09:56 and there is some post interview discussion. Despite him losing his place within the Congregation for Bishops on the 16th December, Cardinal Burke is a great Prince of the Church and I pray that his voice and influence will continue to be heard in Rome.

On behalf of the LMS Wrexham membership, I offer my congratulations to Dr and Mrs Joseph Shaw on the birth of their son on Christmas Day. As you will know, Dr. Shaw is LMS chairman. He has an entry on his own blog here.
Well done. Deo Gratias! Be you a Latin Mass Society member or not, have Blessed and Holy Christmas. Thank you for your support and most importantly your prayers in the short time since I became Wrexham representative for the LMS. God Bless and Keep you! As we enter the Holy Season of Christmastide, the beautiful words of the Introit from Midnight Mass are worthy of reflection ...... Introitus Ps 2:7.
These photographs are courtesy of Canon Montjean at the Shrine Church of Ss Peter, Paul and Philomena - over the border in the Diocese of Shrewsbury. They show the Bishop of Shrewsbury, the Right Reverend Mark Davies celebrating Mass in the Extraordinary Form whilst on a recent visit to the Institute of Christ the King Sovereign Priest seminary at Gricigliano in Tuscany, Italy.
I understand this was his first public Mass using the Old Rite and I pray, please God, it will be the first of many! Father Doyle will celebrate a Missa Cantata at St Winefride's, Well Street, Holywell this coming Sunday (22nd December) - Everyone is welcome! The Mass will begin at 11.30am.
A record number of candidates received the Sacrament of Confirmation in the Traditional Rite last Saturday, at a ceremony in central London organised by the Latin Mass Society.
Nearly fifty children and adults received Confirmation in the Extraordinary Form from Bishop John Arnold, auxiliary in Westminster, at St James’s Church, Spanish Place on Saturday, 14th December. He was assisted by Fr Christopher Colven, the rector of St James’s, Fr Tim Finigan of Our Lady of the Rosary, Blackfen, and Fr Rupert McHardy of the London Oratory. Following the Confirmations, the bishop celebrated Pontifical Benediction. After the ceremonies, Bishop Arnold joined the candidates, their sponsors and families in the parish social centre for a celebration buffet lunch. The Latin Mass Society has been organising annual Confirmations in the Extraordinary Form for several years now. This past year there were also Traditional Confirmations at Reading and New Brighton, organised respectively by the Fraternity of St Peter and the Institute of Christ the King Sovereign Priest. LMS General Manager, Mike Lord, said: ‘We are very grateful to Bishop Arnold for agreeing to confer the Sacrament on what has been a very successful and happy day. We always attract a good number of candidates to receive Confirmation in the Traditional Rite, but this year’s turnout has been exceptional. It demonstrates that the attraction of the Extraordinary Form as part of Catholic life for many families is continuing to grow.’ No prizes for knowing the location of the famous Catholic dome pictured right. I use the picture of St Peter's Basilica in Rome to give a flavour of what is hoped can be achieved at the Shrine of Ss Peter, Paul and Philomena in New Brighton aka 'The Dome of Home'. Known as the ‘Dome of Home’ to returning sailors because it is a recognisable beacon approaching the port of Liverpool, the Roman Catholic Church of Saints Peter, Paul and Philomena stands at the top of Atherton Street and proudly looks down on Liverpool Bay. Subject to funding, the latest project in the ongoing programme of restoration of this beautiful Wirral landmark will be to illuminate the impressive dome. However, this will cost and whilst some grant funding via Wirral Borough Council's 'Love Wirral' initiative is being sought, the Shrine is seeking the support of all, particularly from the commercial sector, to help achieve something similar to St Peter's (or St Paul's in London) - For more information, please read the attached letter which was distributed after Mass yesterday and if you can help please do respond. At the excellent Shrine Christmas luncheon today, we were chatting about the prominence of the dome on the Wirral skyline. I can see it clearly on my northbound journey on the M53 from Chester - I'm uplifted by the sight of it each morning as I make my way to work. It can also be seen over in Liverpool, Bootle and Waterloo. it would be spectacular to see it illuminated at night - not only to promote the Shrine and the work of the Institute of Christ the King Sovereign Priest, but also as a fairly unique means of promoting Wirral as a destination to visit. Ss Peter, Paul and Philomena - pray for us! The funeral of Fr Gary Walsh SSS, a priest of the Blessed Sacrament Shrine in Dawson Street, Liverpool took place at the City's Metropolitan Cathedral of Christ the King today - Fr Gary was a popular man who was everything that a Catholic Priest should be and I along with many others attended the funeral to pray for the passing of a good priest. He passed from this world last week aged 53 after illness. Please pray for his soul. Fr Walsh was known to me via my attending at the shrine and he always found time to speak. He also said the Norvus Ordo Mass with reverence and without unnecessary fuss. He also made many visits to Ss Peter, Paul and Philomena in New Brighton when Canon Olivier Meney ICKSP was Rector - he is pictured above with Abbe Cosme Montjean to his right, (brother of current Rector, Canon Amaury Montjean) during a outdoor devotion to Our Lady of Fatima. A fitting tribute can be found here. For some time now I have prayed some hours of the Divine Office using the 1961 Breviary as opposed to the Paul VI edition in the vernacular. Perhaps we forget that Summorum Pontifcum not only clarified and allowed freedom to use at least the 1962 edition of the Roman Missal of Blessed John XXIII, the same Moto Proprio also allowed for the use of the 1961 edition of the Roman Breviary. The canonically obliged are required to recite the hours in Latin, the laity may use either text. So, good to report is that Baronius Press have announced their Latin/English version of the Breviary is now back in stock for UK purchasers. This uses St. Jerome's traditional Gallican Psalter from the Vulgate throughout, it is a newly typeset 3 volume set and not a copy and also comes in a quality leather binding. It is based on the popular Collegeville Press edition of 1963, some of those sets can command some high prices when they go on sale so it may be worthwhile making an investment on this new set now because I do not think Baronius will be doing another print run, if I read their website correctly. The usual 2nd Saturday Mass takes place at Our Lady of the Rosary Church, Jubilee Road, Buckley this Saturday at 12.30pm.
A Missa Cantata (Second Sunday of Advent resumed) will be celebrated by Father Francis Doyle. Father Francis Doyle who celebrates our regular Extraordinary Form Masses at Buckley and Holywell faced the perennial dilemma that many Parish Priests and/or Parish Fair organisers encounter at this time of the year - who will play Father Christmas! This year he asked yours truly. Not a thinking of myself as a natural, I soon grew into the part and I do believe that my 2 year old daughter (pictured) was not at all suspect of this strange man who looked like her father but somehow wasn't! Of course quite timely this year as the feast of St Nicholas, who had a reputation for secret gift-giving and who is known to many children as Santa Claus was just yesterday. |
