The Francis effect

Father Simon Henry (pictured left)  has made an excellent post at his blog which enjoys cult following - offerimustibidomine.blogspot.co.uk

Have a read here.

I have much affinity with the sentiment. It doesn't sit comfortably with me that the secular press and occasionally certain Catholic news outlets seem to suggest that Pope Francis manages to be better than his predecessors. My brow has lowered a few times over the use of the term 'The Francis Effect'.

Pope Francis has his own style, as did Benedict XVI, as did Blessed John Paul II and so on and so forth - all of them unique, all of them the same - The Petrine Ministry.

You cannot be serious!?

The famous screeching voice of 80's Tennis Player John McEnroe, bellowing out "You cannot be serious" to that poor Wimbledon umpire was mimicked by me verbatim when I read the article below.

I wondered if I should burst out in laughter or lie down in a dark room - I decided to do neither and instead took my Breviary and prayed some Psalms for the Priest concerned - have a read:

"San Francisco, CA–Citing a lack of time and energy, as well as feeling the “total absence of the liturgical muse,” local pastor Father Mike Conway this week spent close to no time at all considering a theme for this Sunday’s Mass. “I remember just ten years ago when I could come up here with my jeans and piece of straw in my mouth for a Hillbilly Mass, before changing into a Barney costume for my Children’s Mass,” Conway said, fondly describing a time when the uncharted landscape of Mass themes seemed as boundless as the sea. “Ah, yes…those were days of adventure; days when a priest could become a sort of clerical Columbus, voyaging his own imagination for the most absurd and inventive themes to keep the Mass from getting stale. Indeed, those were the days. But alas, after so many Clown Masses, Superhero Masses, Meme Masses, Luau Masses, World Cup Masses, and Atheist Masses, it seems as though the liturgical muse has hidden himself from mine eyes.” Conway went on to say that he was not the only priest having trouble coming up with new themes and that many had been dipping into old “routines” for years now. “So this week, unfortunately, my flock is going to just have to sit and put up with me wearing vestments and reading from the Missal. Ohh…you know what? Maybe I can have a reverent theme. That might be funny.” At press time, Conway is preparing a Latin themed Mass, in which everything would be said in Latin, and everyone would be dressed as centurions."

February consistory will see Archbishop Nichols                    made a Prince of the Roman Church

Congratulations go to Archbishop Vincent Nichols of Westminster, who will be made a Cardinal at the first consistory of Pope Francis.

He was ordained a priest for the Archdiocese of Liverpool in 1969. He was made
an Auxiliary Bishop of Westminster in 1991 taking the titular see of Othona, he became Archbishop of Birmingham
in 2000 and in 2009 was made Archbishop of Westminster. The Crosby born prelate is 68 and therefore is a voting Cardinal in any conclave. As a keen supporter of Liverpool Football Cub, red would be his colour of choice!

The other Cardinals to be created in this first consistory of the Franciscan Pontificate
are:

- Archbishop Pietro Parolin, Vatican Secretary of State;
- Archbishop Lorenzo Baldisseri, Secretary of the Synod of Bishops;
- Archbishop Gerhard Ludwig Müller, Prefect, Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith
- Archbishop Beniamino Stella, Prefect of the Congregation for the Clergy;
- Archbishop Leopoldo José Brenes Solórzano of Managua, Nicaragua;
- Archbishop Gérald Cyprien Lacroix of Québec;
- Archbishop Jean-Pierre Kutwa of Abidjan, Ivory Coast;
- Archbishop Orani João Tempesta of Rio de Janeiro;
- Archbishop Gualtiero Bassetti of Perugia-Città della Pieve;
- Archbishop Mario Aurelio Poli of Buenos Aires;
- Archbishop Andrew Yeom Soo jung of Seoul;
- Archbishop Ricardo Ezzati Andrello of Santiago de Chile;
- Archbishop Philippe Nakellentuba Ouédraogo of Ouagadougou, Burkina Faso;
- Archbishop Orlando Quevedo of Cotabato, Philippines;
- Bishop Chibly Langlois of Les Cayes, Haiti.

He also appointed three non-voting cardinals who are over 80:

-Archbishop Loris Francesco Capovilla, former secretary to John XXIII,
-Emeritus Archbishop Fernando Sebastián Aguilar of Pamplona
-Archbishop Kelvin Edward Felix of Castries, Saint Lucia.

The consistory will be held on 22nd February 2014.

The Holy Father celebrates Mass Ad Orientem
Continuing his predecessors example, Pope Francis today celebrated Norus Ordo Mass in the Sistine Chapel ad orientem.

This is not the first time that The Holy Father said the New Mass facing away from the people. It was reported last November that he had said Mass at the altar of Blessed John Paul II facing toward the glory of God.

Bid to light up the Dome

8/1/2014

Picture
You may remember my earlier blog on the noble bid to get sufficient finance to illuminate the grand dome of Ss Peter, Paul and Philomena at New Brighton, Wirral aka The Dome of Home.

The church is truly a beacon of hope for Traditional Catholicism in this country and
the plan to light up the iconic dome would further draw attention to this magnificent Wirral landmark and to the mission of the Institute of Christ the King Sovereign Priest who have guardianship of the church by arrangement with the Diocese of Shrewsbury.

Pleasing to see today,
was support and coverage from the secular press. The Liverpool Echo ran a story on this ambitious plan which you can read here.

There will be lots of focus on Wirral later this year with the Open Golf Championship at the Royal Liverpool, Hoylake
- how great it would be that some of the money destined to promote Wirral at Hoylake could be used to good measure in New Brighton!

Traveling Light?

The Canons of St. John Cantius in Chicago have undertaken a great work - a new printing of a travel-size 1962 Missale Romanum.

Now, I am blessed that the priests who celebrate the Extraordinary Form in Wrexham Diocese have their own copy of the 1962 Missal and I have a full size LMS supplied copy dating from 1953.

But this new printing is only
6½" wide by 8⅝" high and 1⅝" thick - just the right size to have at your disposal should you need to travel from venue to venue.

It would appear to be available state side only at the present - this could be prohibitive given US to UK carriage charges - Perhaps a UK based distributor will become interested? [update: Father Scott Haynes from the Canons of St. John Cantius has sent me a nice e-mail in which he confirms that shipping to the UK is not a problem].

Holy days of Obligation

1/1/2014

Timely, as I have just posted information on Epiphany Mass times, is the following note about the 1962 calendar, the Bishops' Conference decision to move some of them to the nearest Sunday and the relationship between the two.

Following a request for information the Bishops' Conference of England and Wales submitted a dubium to the Pontifical Commission Ecclesia Dei which confirmed that in the Roman Rite, whichever Form of the liturgy is being celebrated, the Holydays of Obligation are held in common.

The Latin Mass Society sought further clarification from the Pontifical Commission which confirmed that In accordance with nn. 356-361 of the Rubricae Generales Missalis Romani of 1962, it is appropriate to celebrate the external solemnity of certain Holy Days on the Sunday to which they have been legitimately transferred by the Episcopal Conference. It further confirmed that it is legitimate to continue to celebrate the Mass and Office of these feasts on the days prescribed in the 1962 Calendar though there is no obligation for the faithful to attend Mass on those days.
