Preparing for Holywell

PicturePractise for the Pilgrimage Mass
The annual Latin Mass Society Pilgrimage Mass to St Winefride's, Holywell is now just 38 days away. This year, Mass is a Pontifical High Mass at the Faldstool on Sunday 6th July at 2.30pm.

A significant milestone towards the 6th is the
Mass practice and that took place today on the Wirral.

I am grateful to the clergy involved: the Abbot of Belmont, the Right Reverend Paul Stonham OSB together with Father Geoffrey Marlor and Father Francis Wadsworth.

Additional thanks go to AP Canon Montjean (who hosted the practice at the Shrine Church of Ss Peter and Paul and Philomena in New Brighton) and MC Michael Haynes.

It was good to meet up and we enjoyed lunch in the Presbytery after practice - Monica and Ronnie thanks for the meal preparation it was delicious!

Incidentally, any clergy who are able to attend are welcome to sit in choro.

At the end of each Olympic Games, the President of the International Olympic Committee always announces that "these games have been the best ever". Well, despite the LMS One Day Conference only having been held twice, I think Chairman Joseph Shaw would surely have been able to make a similar proclamation at the end of today's Conference held in the capital.

Today wasn't a day particularly about rubrical rights and wrongs, the old versus the new, the past against modernity. Rather today was about how the Traditional Mass and Liturgy and its sacred place in our wonderful Catholic Church can engage and re-engage souls.

The interesting array of speakers captivated a full audience in what was a truly informative day on some of the spiritual aspects of the Traditional Liturgy.

'Trad' or not, I don't think many would have failed to be convinced by the gentle lecture delivered by Bishop Athanasius Schneider on ‘The Renewal of the liturgy according to the perennial sense of the Church’ or by the compelling and vigorous instruction given by Father Michael Mary of the Transalpine Redemptorists on ‘The Traditional Mass and Spirituality: 'That we may relate it in another generation".

All speakers gave excellent summaries on an array of topics which linked back to theme for day: 'The Traditional Mass and Evangelisation'.

This event proves that the Latin Mass Society has come a long way and whilst the primary job of getting the Traditional Mass to become woven into parish life is still a work in progress, events like today’s demonstrate that the Society can still offer much to promote the ancient and sacred liturgy - especially poignant as it approaches it’s Golden Jubilee Year.

Holywell this Sunday

Canon HobanCanon Hoban
Occasionally, but thanks be to God rarely, a need or circumstance arises that necessitates a change to our usual Mass arrangement.

As you are already aware such a change had already been advertised in respect of the Missa Cantata at Holywell this coming Sunday, (25th May at Noon).

Father Doyle, our usual celebrant is away on retreat and Father Edmund Montgomery of Shrewsbury Diocese had very kindly agreed to step in.

However, due to Father Montgomery having to provide additional parochial cover not foreseen when arrangements were made it is now not feasible for him to reach Holywell by Noon.

However, I am delighted to say that Canon Brendan Hoban also from Shrewsbury and a former Vicar General of that Diocese has stepped in. We are most grateful to him, especially given the short notice.

High Mass, two wonderful Churches and a cup of tea!

PictureSt Chad's, Birmingham
I made the journey from Flintshire to Birmingham today to attend the Latin Mass Society Pilgrimage at St Chad's Cathedral in the City Centre.

Firstly, a thank you to my fellow LMS representative for the Central Birmingham area, Louis Maciel for both his welcome and for organising things today.

It was a wonderful High Mass, in a stunning Pugin Church accompanied by fitting music.

The Oratorians provided the sacred ministries in their usual eloquent and articulate way. Of course, it was only days since one of their own brethren, Fr Robert Byrne had been
ordained to the Episcopate in the same Church.

The Mass was the Translation of St. Chad, transferred from the IV Tuesday after Easter. This feast celebrates the translation of the relics of St Chad from St Peter's Church in Lichfield to that built by Roger of Clinton, in 1148.

After Mass, I caught the bus along the Hagley Road and visited the The Oratory of Saint Philip Neri. Although the Church was locked when I arrived, a very kind keyholder arranged to open it and so I was able to visit the memorial Church of my beloved Blessed Cardinal John Henry Newman.

Now becoming quite adept with the finer details of the Birmingham bus network, I returned to St Chad's where a post Mass series of devotions was nearing a conclusion.

It was here that I met Father Daniel Horgan, a priest of the Columban Fathers. This is where the cup of tea mentioned in the title comes in!

As we both had an hour or so before our respective trains departed we both enjoyed a good chin wag over a cup of tea - after an hour of chatting, it was as if I had known him for years - he is duly on standby for Wrexham Masses forthwith! - pleased to have met you Father.

St Chad, Blessed John Henry Newman - pray for us!

Father Edmund Montgomery, a priest of the Shrewsbury Diocese will once again come to our aid over the border in May.

Fr. Montgomery will celebrate a Missa Cantata at St. Winefride's, Holywell on Sunday 25th May at Noon. The later Mass time is to allow Fr. to get from his parish Mass in Romiley near Stockport.

Everyone is urged to come along and I thank Fr. Montgomery for his help to cover in the absence of regular celebrant Fr. Doyle who will be on retreat.

Here he is speaking this week on the subject of abortion.
