LMS Joint Reps and Committee Meeting

30/11/2013

PictureLady Chapel at St Dominic's Priory, NW5
Today, I attended the annual meeting of Reps and the LMS Committee at St Dominic's Friary in North London. My second visit to London within a week!

The day began quite rightly with Low Mass celebrated by Fr Gregory Pearson OP using the Dominican Rite.

This rite differs ever so slightly from the Missal promulgated by St Pius V in 1570. At that time, codification of the various rites occurred but those rites over 200 years old  were exempted. The Dominican use being such an example.

It was a great chance to meet up with colleague LMS reps from around the country and to hear of the immense enthusiasm there is around the country.

This concert of Renaissance sacred music, takes place on Sunday 1st December, 7pm at the Shrine of Ss Peter, Paul and Philomena, Atherton Street, New Brighton, Wirral, CH45 9LT.

This will be a special concert featuring sacred music on the theme of the Incarnation from Flemish masters like Josquin and Lassus, performed by the Liverpool Renaissance Group, with the Chester Viols. A wonderful marriage of beautiful architecture and beautiful music, and a perfect way to enter into the spirit of Advent!

Pope sends message to FSSP on their 25th Anniversary

Pope Francis has sent a message of thanksgiving for the work of the FSSP via the Nuncio in France, dissection of this document has begun in some places - I read it for what it is intended to be.

Apostolic Nunciature
           in France
On the occasion of the 25th anniversary of the foundation of the Priestly Fraternity of Saint Peter
Pope Francis joins the thanksgiving of her members for the work accomplished in this quarter-century spent at the service of ecclesial communion cum Petro et sub Petro.

It was in a moment of great trial for the Church that the Priestly Fraternity of Saint Peter was created. In a great spirit of obedience and hope, her founders turned with confidence to the Successor of Peter in order to offer the faithful attached to the Missal of 1962 the possibility of living their faith in the full communion of the Church. The Holy Father encourages them to pursue their mission of reconciliation between all the faithful, whichever may be their sensibility, and this to work so that all welcome one another in the profession of the same faith and the bond of an intense fraternal charity.

By way of the celebration of the sacred Mysteries according to the extraordinary form of the Roman rite and the orientations of the Constitution on the Liturgy Sacrosanctum Concilium, as well as by passing on the apostolic faith as it is presented in the Catechism of the Catholic Church, may they contribute, in fidelity to the living Tradition of the Church, to a better comprehension and implementation of the Second Vatican Council.

The Holy Father exhorts them, according to their own charism, to take an active part in the mission of the Church in the world of today, through the testimony of a holy life, a firm faith and an inventive and generous charity.

Entrusting to the intercession of the Blessed Virgin Mary and of Saint Peter, apostle, all the pilgrims assembled in Lourdes or at the church of Saint-Sulpice in Paris to give thanks to the Lord on this occasion, the Holy Father grants them with open heart the Apostolic Benediction.

Paris, October 28, 2013 On the feast of Saints Simon and Jude, Apostles.

Pope Francis has no issue with Old Rite says Cardinal Castrillón

PictureCardinal Castrillón Hoyos
As you may have been aware, Una Voce International (FCIV) have been holding their assembly in Rome. They meet every 2 years and I had considered attending but God’s will is that I wait for another day!

On Sunday at the Conference Hall of the Casa Maria Immacolata, Cardinal Castrillón Hoyos was the keynote speaker. Cardinal Castrillón Hoyos is a former president of the pontifical commission Ecclesia Dei.

What will interest those who cherish the Traditional Liturgy is that the Cardinal informed those gathered that the Roman Pontiff does not plan to interfere with the Old Rite. I see elsewhere that the Cardinal had met Pope Francis on the 31st October.

“I met Pope Francis very recently and he told me that he has no problem with the old rite, and neither does he have any problem with lay groups and associations like yours that promote it,” he told Una Voce International members.

So, take heart – the brakes are not about to be applied and reverse gear selected!

[It is claimed that Cardinal Castrillón is the Pope's main contact for Traditional matters as a Bishop Fernando Rifan (Apostolic Administrator of the Personal Apostolic Administration of St. John Mary Vianney, in Campos, Brazil) has suggested so in the recent past, he himself having met the Pontiff shortly after the conclave.]

Also, the recent issue of the Friars of the Immaculate was discussed. His Eminence said that the Pope moved to insist on the use of the Novus Ordo in that religious community only because of internal dissension, and not because of any negative judgment on the traditional liturgy.

Meanwhile, at its general assembly, Una Voce International elected a new president: James Bogle, lawyer, author, chairman of the Catholic Union of Great Britain and friend of the Latin Mass Society.

“We are very grateful to His Eminence Cardinal Castrillon Hoyos, His Eminence Cardinal Brandmüller, and to Archbishop Pozzo for taking part in our General Assembly of the International Federation Una Voce,” Bogle said.

He continued, “We are very pleased with the way the celebration of the traditional Mass is now going worldwide. We are obviously very grateful to Benedict XVI and also our present Pope Francis for all the support that they have given us in our right to worship in the traditional Roman rite.”

St Winefride

Today is the feast of St Winefride, a secondary patron of the diocese of Wrexham and our neighbours in Shrewsbury.

Very little is known about her except that she lived in the 6th or 7th century near Treffynon (Holywell) in Clwyd in Wales. Various miraculous stories are told about her, and her cult has been widespread since the Middle Ages. Its main centres were Shrewsbury, where her remains were enshrined in 1138, and the well at Holywell that sprang up where, according to one version of her life, she was beheaded and then restored to life by her uncle, St Beuno. The well has remained a place of healing and pilgrimage through the Reformation to the present day indeed The Latin Mass Society holds an annual pilgrimage to her shrine every July.

As the 3rd November this year falls on a Sunday so the IV Sunday remaining after the Epiphany ranks higher and next year All Souls is transferred to the 3rd November but that doesn't preclude us from asking Blessed Winefride to PRAY FOR US!

More fair than all the vernal flowers
Emblosom'd in the dales,
St. Winefride in beauty bloom' d,
The rose of ancient Wales.

With every loveliest grace adorn' d,
The Lamb's unsullied bride,
Apart from all the world she dwelt
Upon this mountain side.

Caradoc then, with impious love,
Her fleeing steps pursued,
And in her sacred maiden blood
His cruel hands imbrued.

He straight the debt of vengeance paid,
lngulf d in yawning flame;
But God a deed of wonder work'd
To her immortal fame.

For where the grassy sward received
The martyr's severed head,
This holy fountain upward gush' d,
Of crystal vein' d with red.

Here miracles of might are wrought;
Here all diseases fly;
Here see the blind, and speak the dumb,
Who but in faith draw nigh.

Assist us, glorious Winefride,
Dear virgin, ever blest!
The passions of our hearts appease,
And lull each storm to rest.

All Souls in Birmingham

Picture
Probably not a quality photo, but High Mass in the Extraordinary Form at Birmingham Oratory today was a poignant liturgy for All Souls Day.

I always wonder that given our duty to pray for the souls of those in purgatory, perhaps All Souls or the 'Commemoration of the Faithful Departed' (as it is officially titled), should perhaps be a day of obligation - especially as since there is a plenary indulgence that can be gained for the those very souls we pray for.

Although Holy Mother the Church does grant some flexibility in so much as every day until the 8th - the indulgence can be gained by saying prayers for the departed in a cemetery, upon the usual conditions: communion within a couple of days, confession within a week, and finally prayers for the Holy Father.

But given the congregation at Birmingham today, I need not worry to much! An obligation to attend Mass was not required for the large turnout at The Oratory - was both impressive and reassuring!
