This church forms part of the US HQ of the Institute of Christ the King Sovereign Priest who of course have houses in England at Preston and New Brighton.
The church is a historic landmark – it was built in 1923 as St. Gelasius parish, and the Institute of Christ the King Sovereign Priest was already in the midst of renovating the building. A severe fire already caused major damage in the 1970's.
The fire took 150 firefighters several hours to bring under control. The investigation thus far indicates that the fire began late at night in the wooden choir loft, and quickly spread through the church. No one was hurt, thankfully, but substantial damage was done.
The fire destroyed most of the roof of the church, the entire choir loft, the windows, and most of the interior furnishings of the church. The damage from water and smoke in the rest of the church and sacristy is extensive and is still being assessed.
Arrangements for the continuation of Mass have been made and the local television news has covered events and this has additionally has raised the profile of the ICKSP and the Traditional Mass.
