Those are the final words of today's Gospel, John 8:46-59.
In the vernacular, "Jesus hid himself, and went out of the temple."
Jesus is obliged to hide Himself when humanity ‘stones' the Divine.
This is one of the reasons that that sacred images and crucifixes are veiled in violet. Our Lord upon the crucifix is unveiled after the Good Friday liturgy, whilst other images are unveiled shortly before the Mass of the Easter Vigil.
Sadly, the practice has fallen in to disuse in some churches, whilst in others images and statues are actually removed from the church and not simply veiled, especially after Holy Thursday.
On a personal level, as I journey through Lent, it is all to easy to become complacent and loose a little focus. The covering of the crosses and images helps me re-double the Lenten effort in the knowledge that the days of the Triduum: the institution of the Eucharist, the suffering and torment of Good Friday and the ultimate victory of Easter Day are nigh upon us.
